Participants will review peer reviewed articles that review the effectiveness of
bibliotherapy with various client populations and experiences. They then will
discuss how books can be paired with other Play Therapy interventions such as
puppetry, sandtray, role playing and art based interventions.
Participants will be able to evaluate stories to attain three main goals: assessment,
treatment/healing and evaluation. Finally, participants will create a bibliotherapy
resource as a capstone project for LEVEL 1 of this program.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze existing bibliotherapy research to evaluate its relevance and
application within Play Therapy practice.
2. Examine how bibliotherapy functions as a dynamic three-way interaction
among the play therapist, client, and therapeutic resources.
3. Determine and justify how to select books or stories that best meet the
developmental and therapeutic needs of Play Therapy clients.
4. Experiment with and apply storytelling games to achieve specific therapeutic
goals within Play Therapy sessions.
5. Identify and evaluate the key elements of a book that contribute to its
therapeutic value in Play Therapy.
6. Assess the importance of inclusive and diverse bibliotherapy resources in
supporting equitable and culturally sensitive Play Therapy practice.
7. Curate and organize a list of bibliotherapy resources that can be shared with
families or integrated into Play Therapy interventions.
