Essentials of ethical practice and power and privilege in the Play Therapy Relationship.

Overview

This will be an introduction into ethics and a review of ethical decision- making models in a Play Therapy setting. The CACPT Code of Ethics will be reviewed in addition to participants reviewing their own code of ethics for their own regulatory college. Some time will be focused on  child-therapist relationships, Play Therapy case reporting, ethical considerations such as confidentiality, dual relationships in Play Therapy.

We also will review how power and privilege is inherent in all that we do as play therapists, hence we will review the Calls to action for the Truth and Reconciliation report as well as

Evaluate and justify the importance of engaging in ethical practice in Play Therapy, analyzing how ethical principles guide therapeutic decision-making and professional conduct.

Interpret and apply the CAPT Code of Ethics to complex clinical scenarios, demonstrating ethical reasoning and accountability in professional Play Therapy practice.

Define and critically examine the concept of confidentiality in Play Therapy, analyzing its boundaries and evaluating ethical responses when working with vulnerable populations.

Critically assess the ethical and cultural considerations related to the use of touch in Play Therapy, integrating mediating factors that ensure client safety and therapeutic appropriateness.

Apply and evaluate an ethical decision-making model to Play Therapy dilemmas, formulating well-reasoned resolutions that align with professional standards and client welfare.

Analyze and reflect on personal identity, privilege, and power to evaluate how these dynamics influence the therapeutic relationship and client engagement in Play Therapy.

Critically analyze historical and current forms of oppression and evaluate how these dynamics may manifest symbolically or behaviorally in clients’ play within therapy sessions.

Develop and demonstrate skills that foster openness, sensitivity, and responsiveness in identifying and addressing various forms of oppression experienced by clients in Play Therapy.
